In love and design, opposites attract! When done right, mixing styles and textures and playing colours off of each other can be a great way to create harmony out of seemingly clashing elements. Close your eyes and picture a white house with black windows, or a colourful front door on a façade with a more natural hue, and you’ll know exactly what we’re talking about. Of course, be careful not to go overboard and end up with an overly busy eyesore!

Clean, open spaces with great natural light are all the rage these days, making houses with big windows a hot commodity on the market. In addition to being a great showcase for the architecture itself, both on the outside and on the inside, wide windows let in natural light that provides the perfect canvas for whatever style of decoration you’re going for.

Dark, rich colours

Deep, warm hues are sweeping the décor world right now, and we are tickled pink! Orangey browns, beiges with honey or amber undertones, spice reds and other autumnal colours are particularly popular these days. Pair them with milky whites and black accents for a natural, calming effect. Look on the other end of the colour wheel and you’ll find classic blue, the Pantone colour of the year, a great way to make your living room or bedroom walls pop. It can also make for a beautiful front door.

Clean, crisp lines

This season, it’s out with arches, bay windows and other rounded elements, and in with sharp, clean angles! It’s all about straight lines, from architecture to furniture, with touches of both mid-century modern and more contemporary design trends. Wide doors with transoms or doorglass, large asymmetric patio doors and garage doors with doorglass all come to mind as examples of what a good, clean line can do for you.
