2018 Trends: Choosing Your Colours
Each year, trend specialists around the world draw inspiration from all sorts of things (fashion, landscapes, cities, etc.) to establish that year’s trendy colours.
Those colours are then used for walls and furniture, but also house exteriors.

Vibrant colours are increasingly finding their way into your surroundings. You’re used to seeing them in houses (accent walls, furniture, accessories, etc.), but these daring shades can also bring the front of a house to life. Although you’ll rarely see a house covered entirely in green, red or yellow, bright colours certainly have their place in other parts of the exterior—for example, the front door is an excellent place for a trendy, colourful front accent! Choosing the right colour
Your goal when choosing a colour for a room or for the front of your house should always be to create a certain harmony. Start by analyzing the components of a space!
Outside
The architecture will dictate what colours are appropriate to use. Depending on the style of your house—contemporary, colonial or rural—some materials will be more appropriate (brick, stone, vinyl covering, etc.). The house’s surroundings can also serve as inspiration when choosing your colour palette: a nearby forest, lake or river, and even close neighbours, should be taken into consideration.
If you don’t want to change the windows and covering, those pre-existing elements will guide you in your choice of exterior colours. Avoid “tone on tone” at all costs. Instead, you should go for contrasting (dark door on white or pale covering) or complementary colours (red door on a warm-toned house such as brown, beige, etc.).

If your window frames are in a neutral colour and you want to create an accent, choose a front door with a contrasting colour.
Inside
To choose a colour, you need to consider the colour of your furniture and floors (which are more difficult to change!), along with the lighting in the room. You can also use an accessory you like as a starting point! To avoid visual overload created by an overly eclectic mix of colours, choose one bright tone for a wall, or for a piece of furniture or wall art. Match it with complementary and neutral colours in the rest of the room using such things as a rug or decorative accessories. For example:

If the accent is bright blue, go for a complementary grey-blue shade.

If the accent is a warm colour (red, yellow, orange), use a shade of beige or white to complement it.
Whatever you decide, the important thing is to stay true to your taste. Whether inside or outside, don’t be afraid to take the plunge on a dash of vivid colour. Look to the 2018 colours for inspiration and create your own trendy look!
